Local sailors Peter and Wendy MacGregor took out the Queensland State Title over the weekend 5-6 July
Queensland Tasar State Titles - Report Only two points separated the top three boats in a heart stopping conclusion to the State Tasar Titles held at Tinaroo this last weekend.
A fleet of 27 boats from across Queensland raced in a highly competitive fleet on Lake Tinaroo. With two ex-state champion combinations and the current champion involved, the racing promised to be very competitive.
Race 1: Current champion Warwick Heath arrived by plane at the last minute to team with his mum Judy on their boat “Beebop” to win the first heat easily. Mitchell Heath and Max Creedy sailing “Shredder” finished second.John Jacob and Aidan Philippa relishing the stronger winds finished a very close third. Peter and Wendy MacGregor decided to test the temperature of the water in Tinaroo in July and immersed themselves and their boat “Tortle”.
Race 2: The windy conditions lightened off in the afternoon and suited the lighter crews. Peter and Wendy managed to avoid a huge pile up at the wing mark and went on to win. Kieran and Dane Mouldey put together an excellent race and finished 2nd. Third place went to Mitch and Max.
Race 3: In similar conditions the MacGregors dominated this race and led from start to finish. “Shredder” finished second and “Beebop” in third.
Race 4: On Sunday morning the breeze was in again and the heavier crews relished the conditions. Warwick and Judy came from behind to pip Mitch and Max on the line by the closest of margins. The MacGregors held on to beat a fast finishing John Jacob and Aidan Philippa for third place.
Race 5: With each crew now able to drop their worst heat. The MacGregors came back strongly into the calculations on the scoreboard. Going into the last heat “Beebop” and “Tortle” were tied and led “Shredder” by a single point. It was all down to which boat won the last heat. Any one of three boats could take the title. The lighter conditions promised to suit the MacGregors.
All did not begin well for Peter and Wendy who had to return after the start for jumping the gun. Ex-champion Lachlan Heath and his crew Carmen Walker rounded the top mark in first place. His brother Mitchell rounded in second and the MacGregors made a miraculous recovery from their very poor start to round in third. Warwick and Judy languishing in fifth were apparently out of the running for the major prize.
Possible points combinations were being mentally re-calculated by competitors and spectators. If the positions remained as they were Mitchell and Max would not be able to beat Peter and Wendy in the overall results. They had to pass Lachlan and Carmen and have the MacGregors finish in third to win. The MacGregors at worst had to finish in the position behind Mitch and Max. The racing was intense and very close with each competitor covering their most immediate threat.
The break came on the second last leg Mitchell and Max managed to get through Lachlan and Carmen and into first place. This left Peter and Wendy in third and the major prize seemed out of their grasp. Up the last work the three boats were neck and neck. Mitch and Max crossed the line in first place and for a few seconds seemed to have the title in their hands. The MacGregors had other ideas and in the last metre of the race seemed to throw their boat over the finishing line to snatch the title by less than a second.
With the points for first place now even the MacGregors win the title on a countback. Their two heat wins broke the tie. Only two points behind and having led the regatta from the start Warwick and Judy Heath finished in third place overall.
The prizes were dominated by FNQ sailors with the strong teams from Tinaroo Sailing Club and Mission Beach Sailing Club taking the medals.

Learn to Sail: Mike Tolley and Rob Newson are running a "Beginners Session" between 10am and 12 noon each club day. Participants will be expected to join the club and provide their own PFD. Intermediate Group: Peter MacGregor will provide ongoing coaching for sailors who have completed the Learn to Sail Course with Mike. The aim will be to assist these sailors to become more independent. Sailors will graduate from this class when they are competent and confident to participate in the club's afternoon racing. Participants will once again be expected to be club members.
